Whether you wish to dive the great barrier reef, marvel at the Sydney Opera House or just visit your friends or family you are going to need a travel visa.

Visas can be issued for any amount of time from 3 months to 12 months but generally one is only allowed to stay in Australia for maximum 3 months per entry within their visa validity dates. Ultimately, the issuing authority determines the actual validity period granted.

Once the application has been lodged online the applicant would be sent a letter requesting them to attend at a Australian VAC closest to them to provide their biometrics. Applicants will need to take this letter with them to an AVAC when providing biometrics so the AVAC is able to match their application with the biometrics collected.

Applicants aged 75 years of age and older or expecting to attend a hospital/medical facility for ANY reason or intend to spend over 3 months in Australia are required to include medicals as part of their visa application. These medical tests would need to be taken at approved medical examination providers/panel physicians authorised by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Holders of some foreign passports (e.g. British, Spanish, Italian etc.) will be entitled to apply for an electronic visa which will grant them pre-approved entry into Australia. This pre-approval is generally issued within 48 hours and is virtual i.e. you won't get a physical document like a visa in your passport. This electronic visa (ETA or eVisitor visa) is valid for 12 months from date of issue and allows for multiple stays of up to 3 months.
